Parody Twitter accounts pop up every single day. Fake Peter Molyneux spouts ridiculous game concepts, fake Kim Jong Un laments his people’s hunger, hell- I even started a fake Barbara Walters account back in the day.
The goon squad behind @thinkingcatalog instead decided not to spoof a celebrity, but a burgeoning non-fiction blog called Thought Catalog.
“I feel like a big reason the joke is so easy for us to do and for others to “get” is because we aren’t just spoofing Thought Catalog,” the @thinkingcatalog team collectively wrote to me, “we’re also spoofing ourselves.”
The subject of their gag is hugely popular, with 10 million pageviews every single month. They describe themselves on their “About” page with such loaded platitudes as, “We’re about today. But our mission is also archival. We plan on sticking around for a longtime,” and “Reading Thought Catalog will probably make you more interesting.”
